 Celebrations

-kb (2022)
Snow covered fields, with deer running free
Pinecones around, cardinals gazing at me
At the window I stand, by the warmth of the fire
Memories abound, inflaming desire
Waking my parents when the sun wasn’t out
For the family gathering as gifts laid about
When Dad was alive, and we called him daddy
And Mom moseyed downstairs, still as mommy
Experiencing joy, peace, hope, and love
From daddy and mommy, and the great Lord above
Lights dancing on walls, in red, green, and blue
Elvis belting of a blue Christmas without you
Telling the tale of the Miracle on 34th Street
And tinsel, of course, or Christmas is incomplete
The story unfolding that Santa’s a fraud
But daddy saying St. Nick had been called
To share the Lord’s love with all who would hear
To inspire the world to be joyful and cheer
For generations to praise the birth of the Christ
I learned, as a child, of His great sacrifice
Then, I was awoken before the sunrise
By excited young children that opened my eyes
They dragged us downstairs to lights on the tree
To wrapping paper, boxes, and scents of coffee
As I stand at the window, and see the deer run
My aching heart misses years ago fun
The cardinal gives me one last glance
The pinecone falls as though doing a dance
Eyes follow the cone til it lands on the ground
And I see the squirrel family that gathers around
Like my siblings and I did with my mom and dad
As my children did when they were little and glad
The Lord’s voice fills my heart with a message from heaven
Celebrations are coming with our believing brethren
The young, and the old, those living, those gone
Eternal family fiestas next time that Christ comes
